Eric's Expert Take

Eric is our founder and CEO and has nearly 15 years of experience buying and selling used and junk cars in the state of South Dakota. He is also a data nerd with a finger on the pulse of the cash for cars industry and salvage vehicle values.

Hello, it’s Eric from The Clunker Junker here. Having had a closer look at our recent dealings in South Dakota over the past 30 days, I wanted to share some interesting insights. On average, we’ve been purchasing vehicles at around the $428 mark. If you’re the owner of a smaller car like a Honda Civic or a Toyota Corolla, these types of cars tend to get acquired for a slightly lower average of $379. On the flip side, if you’ve got a pickup truck such Ford F-150 or a Dodge RAM sitting in your backyard, these vehicles are fetching a higher average of around $570. If your vehicle falls into the SUV or crossover category, like a Chevy Equinox or a Honda CR-V, you would be looking at an average offer of $474.

Now focusing on the bigger picture of our operations, I’m pleased to share that The Clunker Junker has acquired approximately 1,259 vehicles recently, with total payments surpassing a staggering half a million dollars. The star of the show in South Dakota has been the Ford F-150. For those who may not know, the Ford F-150 falls into the pickup truck category; it’s a reliably rugged vehicle with a strong workhorse reputation. Despite its many accolades, the F-150 is not without its known issues. Recurring problems such as power window malfunctions, brake and transmission failures to almost certainly hefty repair bills. It might be a wise move to sell your Ford F-150 when the opportunity arises instead of incurring costly and repetitive repair expenses.

By the virtue of my 12 years experience in the “cash for cars” industry, I would say that used car pricing in South Dakota has been quite stable lately. So far, we’ve only been seeing a minor dip of about 2.2% each month, which is essentially on par with the market trends from last year. This suggests that it’s an attractive time to consider selling your car while the market is holding steady. As always, rest assured that I’ll be carefully monitoring the market dynamics and regularly updating you on the most recent trends.

How to sign your South Dakota car title

We have put together a simple guide and example for how to sign your South Dakota title when you are selling your vehicle. If there are multiple owners listed on the title, they must all sign the title unless the names are separated with "OR".

  1. South Dakota has multiple title variants. If the back of your title looks like our sample image below, follow the instructions exactly. Use the "Seller must complete section". If your title instead has a section on the back that says "Authorized Signatures" and section "E", use that to sign and print.
  2. First, sign the back of the title where indicated by "Signature of Seller(s)".
Always sign in pen on the seller line, and never sign in the dealer section.
  3. Next, print (don't sign) your name on the back of the title where it reads "Hand printed name of seller(s)".
Always include any and all middle names or initials that are used in the owner section.

How to get a duplicate South Dakota title

The process for getting a duplicate or replacement South Dakota title is fairly simple. If the vehicle was last titled in a state other than South Dakota you must apply for a duplicate title in the previous state. The registered owner should do the following:

  1. Fill out the State of South Dakota Application for a Duplicate Certificate of Title.
  2. If your vehicle is newer than 10 years old, provide an odometer reading.
  3. Bring your duplicate title application to the local county treasurer's office, or mail your application to the SD division of motor vehicles at:

    Duplicate Title Section
    Division of Motor Vehicles
    445 East Capitol Ave.
    Pierre, SD 57501-3185

  4. Please note that there may be a waiting period before a duplicate title can be issued and the cost is $10.00.

How to get rid of an abandoned vehicle in South Dakota

Getting rid of an abandoned vehicle in South Dakota can be a difficult process. Unfortunately, you cannot just sell any junk car that ends up on your property if you do not own it. You'll need to follow the South Dakota abandoned vehicle removal procedures. We have given a general overview of what that entails below.

You can read more about selling an abandoned vehicle in South Dakota

  1. To have a vehicle removed from your private property, you may enlist the help of a towing service to remove the vehicle. Once the vehicle has been removed, the tow yard holding the vehicle is responsible for locating the last registered owner and/or lienholder.
If the last registered owner and/or lienholder do not express interest within (30) thirty days of certified mail notification, the title will be irrevocably vested in the removal company.
  2. Only the removal service in possession of the abandoned vehicle may apply for the title.
