Eric's Expert Take
Eric is our founder and CEO and has nearly 15 years of experience buying and selling used and junk cars in the state of Missouri. He is also a data nerd with a finger on the pulse of the cash for cars industry and salvage vehicle values.
Hey there, I’m Eric Mitz, the mind behind The Clunker Junker. I’ve been diving into our latest data from Missouri, and here’s what I’ve found: we’re offering an average of $528 for vehicles in the state. For smaller cars, like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla, the average payout is slightly lower at about $454. Meanwhile, if you’re looking to sell an SUV or crossover, such as a Ford Explorer or Honda CR-V, we’re offering top dollar, with averages peaking around $666. Pickup trucks, like the ever-popular Chevrolet Silverado, settle right in the middle at approximately $641.
Recently at The Clunker Junker, we’ve been busy. Over the last 30 days, we’ve purchased about 12,286 vehicles and paid out over $6 million to our customers! In Missouri, the Ford F-150, a classic pickup truck, has been our most commonly purchased vehicle. This truck is known for its durability but can face common issues like transmission troubles, rust, and engine failures as they age. When these problems pile up, repair costs can skyrocket. That’s why choosing to sell an older or problematic F-150 can be a smart financial move instead of sinking more money into it.
From my experience in the cash for cars industry, I’ve seen the importance of market trends. Right now, prices in Missouri are holding steady, changing by only a slight 1.2% each month. This means we’re pretty much where we were a year ago, suggesting a stable market environment. If you’re considering selling your car, now might be an ideal time to act while the market remains predictable. I’ll continue to monitor trends closely and keep you posted with any significant changes or opportunities in the market.
How to sign your Missouri car title
We have put together a simple guide and example for how to sign your Missouri title when you are selling your vehicle. If there are multiple owners listed on the title, they must all sign the title unless the names are separated with "OR".
- On the top of your Missouri title is a section that says "Assignment". This is the section you should sign and print. Make sure you don't put anything in the license dealer only sections!
- First sign the back of the title where indicated by "Signature of all seller(s)".
Always sign in pen on the seller line, and never sign in the dealer section. - Print (don't sign) your name on the back of the title, where it reads "Hand printed name(s) by seller(s)".
Always include any and all middle names or initials that are used in the owner section.
How to get a duplicate Missouri title
The process for getting a duplicate or replacement Missouri title is fairly simple. If the vehicle was last titled in a state other than Missouri you must apply for a duplicate title in the previous state. The registered owner should do the following:
- Complete the Application for Missouri title and license.
- Bring your duplicate title application to your local license office or mail the application to the MO Motor Vehicle Bureau at:
Motor Vehicle Bureau 301 West High Street, Room 370 PO Box 100 Jefferson City, MO, 65105-0100
- Please note that there may be a waiting period before a duplicate title can be issued and the cost is $8.50 plus an additional $2.50 processing fee.
How to get rid of an abandoned vehicle in Missouri
Getting rid of an abandoned vehicle in Missouri can be a difficult process. Unfortunately, you cannot just sell any junk car that ends up on your property if you do not own it. You'll need to follow the Missouri abandoned vehicle removal procedures. We have given a general overview of what that entails below.
You can read more about selling an abandoned vehicle in Missouri
- To have an abandoned vehicle removed from your private property, you must submit a Crime Inquiry and Inspection Report/Authorization to Tow (form-4569) your local law enforcement office unless you have a posted notice prohibiting drivers from leaving their vehicles parked on the private property.
- To apply for the title to an abandoned vehicle, you must also complete Application for Missouri Watercraft or Outboard Motor Title and Registration (form-93) and a General Affidavit (form-768)
- (30) thirty days before applying for a Missouri State Title, you must send the last registered owner and/or lienholder of the vehicle Notice To Owner(s) and Lienholder(s) Regarding Abandoned Vehicle (form-5227) sent through certified mail.
You may attempt to locate the legal owner of the vehicle using the VIN 17-digit number. - The vehicle must also have a Vehicle Examination Certificate (form-551).
- You may then apply for a Junking Certificate.
Can you buy junk vehicles without a title in Missouri?
Yes, we can sometimes buy vehicles without the title. Vehicles are worth less if they don’t have a title, and we can’t guarantee we’ll be able to purchase every vehicle. Our buyers will at minimum require photo identification that matches your registration or insurance to complete the sale.
What if my title doesn’t look like the one pictured?
Missouri often changes their title documents from year to year. If you have questions about your specific title, please contact your Missouri DoR.
Do I need to turn in my license plates?
Yes, unless you are transferring the plates to a new vehicle. You can return the plates to your local DoR office.
What should I do about my auto insurance?
You will need to notify your auto insurance company that you have sold the vehicle, so they can either cancel your policy if the vehicle was sold, or transfer/renew the policy on your new vehicle.
Is there anything else I need to do?
Complete a notice of sale or transfer for your vehicle and return it to your local department of revenue office.
