Eric's Expert Take
Eric is our founder and CEO and has nearly 15 years of experience buying and selling used and junk cars in the state of Maine. He is also a data nerd with a finger on the pulse of the cash for cars industry and salvage vehicle values.
Hi, I’m Eric Mitz, founder and CEO of The Clunker Junker. I’ve been in the cash for cars industry for over 12 years, and I always keep an eye on the market so I can give you the latest updates. Looking over our recent data from Maine, here’s what’s happening: we’ve paid out an average of $497 for vehicles in the area over the last month. Smaller cars like the Honda Civic or Toyota Corolla are getting offers closer to $406 on average. Pickup trucks, such as the Chevrolet Silverado or the ever-popular Ford F-150, are seeing the highest payouts at around $747. SUVs and crossovers—think Ford Escape or Toyota RAV4—fall in the middle, with an average offer of about $561.
In the past 30 days alone, The Clunker Junker has bought roughly 3,973 vehicles nationwide and paid out more than $2 million to car owners just like you. In Maine, the Ford F-150—a reliable and hardworking pickup truck—has been our most frequently purchased vehicle. The F-150 is popular for its versatility, but older models can face issues like rust, worn suspension parts, and engine problems that can be expensive to fix. For a lot of people, selling their F-150 for cash is a better move than spending money on expensive repairs.
The used car market in Maine is holding steady. Prices have only dipped by about 1.3% over the last month, so we’re pretty close to where we were this time last year. That’s good news if you’re thinking about selling your car, because the market is stable and you’re likely to get a fair price. If you’re on the fence, now’s a great time to make your move. I’ll be keeping an eye on any changes in the market and will continue to share updates as trends develop.
Paraphrase: I’m Eric Mitz with The Clunker Junker, and I want to share the latest on what we’re seeing in Maine’s cash-for-cars scene. Right now, we’re buying vehicles for an average of $497 each, though that number shifts depending on what you drive. Compact cars like the Nissan Sentra usually bring in around $406, while larger pickup trucks—like the Ford F-150 or Ram 1500—fetch much higher offers, averaging about $747. In between, crossovers and SUVs—like the Jeep Grand Cherokee or Honda CR-V—are landing offers near $561.
Over the last month, our team at The Clunker Junker has completed nearly 4,000 purchases and paid out upwards of $2 million. The Ford F-150, a full-size pickup truck, is leading the pack in Maine. These trucks are workhorses, but issues like rust, engine troubles, and expensive maintenance make them a good candidate for selling rather than pouring more money into repairs.
Looking at the bigger picture, prices for used cars in Maine haven’t changed much—just a minor drop of 1.3% in the past month. We’re seeing prices close to what they were a year ago, so it’s a steady market. If you’ve been thinking about selling your car, this is a solid time to do it before anything shifts. As always, I’ll stay on top of the trends and keep you in the loop.
How to sign your Maine car title
We have put together a simple guide and example for how to sign your Maine title when you are selling your vehicle. If there are multiple owners listed on the title, they must all sign the title unless the names are separated with "OR".
- Be sure you are using the "Assignment of ownership" section on the top of the back side of the title. Do not sign or print in the Re-assignment by licensed dealer sections!
- First sign the back of the title where indicated by "Seller's signature".
Always sign in pen on the seller line, and never sign in the dealer section. - Print (don't sign) your name on the back of the title, where it reads "Hand printed". Always include any and all middle names or initials that are used in the owner section.
How to get a duplicate Maine title
The process for getting a duplicate or replacement Maine title is fairly simple. If the vehicle was last titled in a state other than Maine you must apply for a duplicate title in the previous state. The registered owner should do the following:
- Fill out the Maine certificate of title request form.
- Bring your duplicate title application to your local BMV or mail your application to the ME Bureau of motor vehicles at:
Title Examination & Information Unit Bureau of Motor Vehicles 29 State House Station Augusta, ME 04333-0029
- Please note that there is a 6 to 8 week waiting period before a duplicate title can be issued and the cost is $33.00. You can have your request expedited for an additional $10.00 fee.
How to get rid of an abandoned vehicle in Maine

You'll need to follow the Maine abandoned vehicle removal procedures. We have given a general overview of what that entails below.
You can read more about selling an abandoned vehicle in Maine
- Attempt to locate the legal owner of the vehicle using the VIN 17-digit number.

Can you buy cars without the title in Maine?
Sorry, we can’t! Our junk car buyers in Maine do not currently buy vehicles unless they have a valid title in hand. Getting a duplicate title is fairly easy, simply contact your local BMV. With a valid title, we would be able to help sell your car.
What if my title doesn’t look like the one pictured?
Maine often changes their title documents from year to year. If you have questions about your specific title, please contact your Maine BMV.
Do I need to turn in my license plates?
Yes, unless you are transferring the plates to a new vehicle. You can return the plates to your local BMV office.
What should I do about my auto insurance?
You will need to notify your auto insurance company that you have sold the vehicle, so they can either cancel your policy if the vehicle was sold, or transfer/renew the policy on your new vehicle.
Is there anything else I need to do?
You must complete and sign a bill of sale for the vehicle and return it to your local BMV office. You can contact them for more information.
