(That’s a lot of lobstah!). Rather than trying to sell your car in Maine to an auto salvage yard, give The Clunker Junker a call first. We buy cars and can often pick up within 1 to 3 business days or less. Sorry, we do not buy lobsters at this time!

Eric Mitz

Eric's Expert Take

Eric is our founder and CEO and has nearly 15 years of experience buying and selling used and junk cars in the state of Maine. He is also a data nerd with a finger on the pulse of the cash for cars industry and salvage vehicle values.

Hey there! Eric Mitz from The Clunker Junker here. I’ve been taking stock of our recent purchase offers in scenic Maine, and here’s what I found. Our average payout for vehicles in your area is hovering around the $466 mark. Naturally, smaller cars like the Honda Fit or the Toyota Corolla are fetching somewhat lesser - about $395 on average - due to their size, mileage, and overall demand. However, pickup trucks like the Ford F-150 or Chevrolet Silverado are a different ball game, bringing in higher offers averaging around $688. As for the ever-popular SUVs and crossovers, such as Hyundai Tucson or Honda CR-V, we’re making offers in the region of $522.

Now let’s talk numbers. At The Clunker Junker, we’ve been quite busy lately, adding over 3,505 vehicles to our purchase list and doling out over 2 million dollars! Our belle of the ball in Maine recently was—drumroll please—the sturdy Subaru Outback. Now the Outback is a unique combination of a wagon and an SUV, highly-loved for its all-weather suitability and roomy interiors. However, like any car, it’s not without its issues. These typically include head gasket leaks and problems with the CVT (continuously variable transmission). Dealing with these repairs can be tricky and expensive, which is why many owners opt to sell it to us instead.

As for the pricing trends, things are looking a bit dicey for used cars, but it might be a good sign if you’re planning to sell! From my perspective, the prices in Maine have been dipping at a rate of about -3.4% each month over the last year. With new car inventories swelling, used cars have taken a bit of a hit - and it doesn’t seem like they’ll be bouncing back soon. So, it might make sense to sell before your car’s value depreciates any further. But don’t worry, keeping tabs on the auto market is my thing, and I’ll make sure to keep you posted on the latest trends.

How to sign your Maine car title

We have put together a simple guide and example for how to sign your Maine title when you are selling your vehicle. If there are multiple owners listed on the title, they must all sign the title unless the names are separated with "OR".

  1. Be sure you are using the "Assignment of ownership" section on the top of the back side of the title. Do not sign or print in the Re-assignment by licensed dealer sections!
  2. First sign the back of the title where indicated by "Seller's signature".
Always sign in pen on the seller line, and never sign in the dealer section.
  3. Print (don't sign) your name on the back of the title, where it reads "Hand printed". Always include any and all middle names or initials that are used in the owner section.

How to get a duplicate Maine title

The process for getting a duplicate or replacement Maine title is fairly simple. If the vehicle was last titled in a state other than Maine you must apply for a duplicate title in the previous state. The registered owner should do the following:

  1. Fill out the Maine certificate of title request form.
  2. Bring your duplicate title application to your local BMV or mail your application to the ME Bureau of motor vehicles at:

    Title Examination & Information Unit
    Bureau of Motor Vehicles
    29 State House Station
    Augusta, ME 04333-0029

  3. Please note that there is a 6 to 8 week waiting period before a duplicate title can be issued and the cost is $33.00. You can have your request expedited for an additional $10.00 fee.

How to get rid of an abandoned vehicle in Maine

Getting rid of an abandoned vehicle in Maine can be a difficult process. Unfortunately, you cannot just sell any junk car that ends up on your property if you do not own it. You'll need to follow the Maine abandoned vehicle removal procedures. We have given a general overview of what that entails below.

You can read more about selling an abandoned vehicle in Maine

  1. Attempt to locate the legal owner of the vehicle using the VIN 17-digit number.
  2. To have a vehicle removed from your private property, you must contact your local law enforcement office.
  3. If you would like to apply for a title to the vehicle, you must submit a Notice to the Secretary of State. The vehicle must have resided on your private property for more than (6) six months before you are able to apply for the title.
Frequently Asked Questions

Can you buy cars without the title in Maine?

Sorry, we can’t! Our junk car buyers in Maine do not currently buy vehicles unless they have a valid title in hand. Getting a duplicate title is fairly easy, simply contact your local BMV. With a valid title, we would be able to help sell your car.

What if my title doesn’t look like the one pictured?

Maine often changes their title documents from year to year. If you have questions about your specific title, please contact your Maine BMV.

Do I need to turn in my license plates?

Yes, unless you are transferring the plates to a new vehicle. You can return the plates to your local BMV office.

What should I do about my auto insurance?

You will need to notify your auto insurance company that you have sold the vehicle, so they can either cancel your policy if the vehicle was sold, or transfer/renew the policy on your new vehicle.

Is there anything else I need to do?

You must complete and sign a bill of sale for the vehicle and return it to your local BMV office. You can contact them for more information.
