Eric's Expert Take

Eric is our founder and CEO and has nearly 15 years of experience buying and selling used and junk cars in the state of Florida. He is also a data nerd with a finger on the pulse of the cash for cars industry and salvage vehicle values.

Howdy, it’s Eric here from The Clunker Junker, giving you the latest insights on used car offers in the sunny state of Florida. I’m finding that, on average, we’re dealing around $686 on vehicles in general. On the smaller end, compact cars are bringing in slightly less, averaging about $659. Let’s say, for instance, you have a Honda Civic. Its convenient size and fuel efficiency might catch your buyer’s eyes. Meanwhile, pickup trucks are in higher demand, bringing in an average of roughly $770, which could significantly increase if you’re selling a model like the Ford F-150, popular for its durability and towing capacity. Then, we have SUVs and crossovers sitting comfortably in the middle, hovering around $750 on average. An example would be a Chevrolet Equinox, well-regarded for its spacious and comfortable interior.

Moving on to our purchase activity at The Clunker Junker, we’ve acquired approximately 26,950 vehicles recently and have shelled out a whopping $20 million in total. It appears that the ride of choice among our Floridian sellers is the Nissan Altima. This midsize sedan’s spacious cabin and enjoyable performance make it a desirable option for many. However, some common issues such as malfunctioning transmission or weak suspension could be costly to repair. It’s for these reasons that many owners choose to sell their Altima rather than investing in onerous repairs.

Being in the “cash for cars” game for over a decade, I have some insights on the used car market trends. Presently, the market in Florida is stable, with a minuscule 1.7% decrease per month. It’s reminiscent of how things were a year ago. I foresee these prices holding steady for some time, translating to a great opportunity for you to sell your car while the market is consistent. Rest assured, I’ll keep my eyes peeled for any significant changes in the market and will keep you informed about the latest trends.

How to sign your Florida car title

We have put together a simple guide and example for how to sign your Florida title when you are selling your vehicle. If there are multiple owners listed on the title, they must all sign the title unless the names are separated with "OR".

  1. On a Florida title, the seller needs to sign on the front in the section that says Transfer of Title By Seller. Make sure you don't sign in the dealer only sections on the back!
  2. First sign your name on the front of the title where it reads "Seller Name (sign here)"
Always sign in pen on the seller line and never sign in the dealer section.
  3. Next, print your name on the front of the title where it reads "Seller Name (print here)" Always include any and all middle names or initials that are used in the owner section.

  2. Bring your duplicate title application to your local county tax collector office or mail your application to your local county tax collector office.
  3. The fee for a replacement Florida title is $75.25 for electronic titles or $77.25 for a physically hard copy, which you will need to transfer ownership. Rush titles through mail are $82.25

Frequently Asked Questions

Frequently asked questions about car sales in Florida

Can you buy cars in Florida if I don’t have my title?

Yes, in many cases! However, you will need to prove that you are the legal owner by providing photo identification that matches the name on your current registration. Note that not all buyers in Florida are willing to buy cars without a title, and your offer may be significantly lower without one.

What if my title doesn’t look like the one pictured?

Florida often changes their title documents from year to year. If you have questions about your specific title, please contact your Florida DMV.

Do I need to turn in my license plates?

Yes, unless you are transferring the plates to a new vehicle. You can return the plates to your local DMV office.

What should I do about my auto insurance?

You will need to notify your auto insurance company that you have sold the vehicle, so they can either cancel your policy if the vehicle was sold, or transfer/renew the policy on your new vehicle.

Is there anything else I need to do after I sell my car?

You may need to notify your local DMV that you have sold the vehicle. You can contact them with any additional questions or concerns about the transfer of your title.
